We’re chasing “The Hip Hop Nutcracker” at the NJ Performing Arts Center in Newark.

Instead of pirouettes and fouettes, you’ll see back flips, break dancing, and street style hip hop. Rap legend Kurtis Blow is the DJ and there’s a live DJ and violinist playing scores of Tchaikovsky mixed in with hip hop interludes.

We spoke to director Jennifer Weber.

“I was really curious about what would happen if you take classical music and merge it with hip hop dance because it’s something no one else has done. It turns out that they’re really beautiful together,” Weber said.
